I am living in China for long time and you can see iphones everywhere. They are sold on electronic markets and include a jailbreak and unlock(!). I am talking about real apple 3G iphones not about those cheap copies. My iphone 3G has a software unlock which is not very stable though. I bought it for 4300 Yuan (=630US-$) There is no 3G network but data transfer with GPRS is fast enough for email, safari and mobile.me updates. In all those starbucks cafes you can connect to the wifi networks. Now I ask myself who's going to buy a official iphone from a local provider if there are less functions? Only a much cheaper price could be a reason.
